The Demarie family have been producing wines at Vezza d’Alba, in the heart of the Roero region, for three generations. Today the company is known for good quality artisan wines from the local varieties of Piedmont, and in particular, for their trust in the local Arneis grape.
#### Three generations of history Bartolomeo Demarie founded the winery. It was passed on to his son Giovanni and today brothers Aldo and Paolo develop the winery today. #### Fragmented vineyard parcels The company own a number of vineyard plots througout the Roero. There are over 20 hectares of vineyards in the boroughs of Vezza, Castagnito, Castellinaldo and Guarene. These small vineyards take advantage of a variety of soils found throughout the appellation, notably the sand, limestone and shell fossils that characterise the Roero. In addition they rent some land in both Barolo and Barbaresco. #### A sustainable future A great deal of work has gone into ensuring that the company is doing everything it can to pursue sustainable viticulture and to reduce the overall impact of their operations in the Roero. A new ‘green’ building has been constructed. #### In the cellar Demarie only produce wines from their own fruit. Generally, they favour soft pressings in the cellar, with the usual temperature controlled fermentations in stainless steel. Maturation generally takes place in wood. There are also some exciting new projects taking shape, notably the creation of a sparkling wine. More on this as soon as we can taste it. #### Experimenting with Arneis In recent years the family have began work on the creation of a new orange wine. Sabbia is made exclusivley from Arneis with extended skin contact. The first vintage was back in 2015 and steady progress has been made since. The wines are promising and even demonstrate a good ability to evolve positively for a few years in the bottle.
