Cantine Antonio Caggiano is one of the top names in Campania. Situated in the village of Taurasi, this family winery makes traditional wines from the classic appellations of Irpinia.
If you visit just one producer in Taurasi make sure it is Antonio Caggiano. This small but beautiful estate located on the edge of the village is host to not only picturesque vineyards planted with brooding Aglianico, but also a wonderfully constructed cellar and charming restaurant. Caggiano is one of the most respected names in the region; his wines, not just the Taurasi DOCG, but also his interpretation of the great whites of Campania - Fiano di Avellino DOCG and Greco di Tufo DOC - are widely acknowledged as excellent in their on right and demonstrate that the Caggiano name is about far more than big powerful red Taurasi. I first visited the estate in the autumn of 2016, jaded somewhat from a long day of tasting. As 4pm approached however there was still time to squeeze another visit in. Not totally in the mood but conscious I'd regret the missed opportunity if I didn't, I rang the office and explained that I was standing in the village and what were the chances of an unscheduled appointment? The stereotypical southern Italian welcome followed and despite also entertaining a bus load of visitors from the north, a hearty three course lunch and full flight of wines emerged.
