Aglianico del Taburno is one of Campania's improving red wines and alongside Taurasi often provides the region's best expression of the Aglianico grape.
Aglianico del Taburno has come a long way in a very short space of time. In the 1980s the area was a source of cheap, pergola cultivated table wine but in the last 25 years, producers have made huge steps towards establishing Taburno as one of the great [Aglianico](/aglianico) terroirs. Aglianico del Taburno was established as a DOC in 1986 but it was in 2011 when the area's hard fought reputation became recognised with the promotion to DOCG status. Although scientific research continues on the [Aglianico](/aglianico) grape in order to establish its true origins, Aglianico del Taburno is a considered a biotype of Aglianico del Taurasi and [Aglianico del Vulture](/aglianico-del-vulture). In the area around the Taburno massif, from which the wine takes it name, the variety carries a much greater level of acidity than on the Vulture.
