Cerasuolo di Vittoria is the only DOCG wine in Sicily. A blend of Nero d'Avola and Frappato grown around the town of Vittoria, the wine is named after its cherry red colour.
In the South East of [Sicily](/region/sicily), one of the island's most treasured and traditional wines is grown. Cerasuolo di Vittoria, from the vineyards surrounding the town of Vittoria, is a light and fruity wine made with the local [Frappato](/frappato) grape. Although wines are produced with both [Nero d'Avola](/nero-davola) and the local [Frappato](/frappato) variety, it is [Frappato](/frappato) that has the biggest influence on the wines. At their best they offer up uniquely light flavours of cherry, raspberry and strawberry. In Sicilian dialect, Cerasa means cherry and undoubtedly provides some insight into how the wine came to be known as Cerasuolo. [Avide](/producer/avide) produce some very good examples of the wine. Their *Etichetta Nera* and also their *Barocco* have always been stand out examples for the area. [Planeta](/producer/planeta), one of the largest estates on the island, have been steadily increasing their production here and it will be little surprise to see them earn extra coverage of this little known DOCG.
