Soave DOC Classico "La Rocca" by Pieropan

Pieropan’s La Rocca is a single vineyard expression of Soave produced exclusively from Garganega. It takes its name from a medieval fortress that dominates the village. La Rocca is distinguished by its limestone soils, a somewhat unusual scenario in the volcanic terrain of Soave. Gentle, whole-bunch pressing using a nitrogen press, there was a short period of maceration on the skins followed by fermentation in stainless steel tanks and 500 litre oak casks. 60% of the wine remained in 500-litre oak casks while the remaining 40% was aged in 2,000 litre 'botti' or large barrels for one year. The final blend was then aged for four months in bottle before release.

Tasting Notes

Intense nose of citrus and succulent stone fruit. Waves of complexity follow, with scents of broom, pear, spicy perfumes and tropical touches of mango. Deep and ripe yet unnervingly lifted and elegant. The palate is round, creamy, polished, but lashed at by sprays of barbed acidity. It finishes with a long, modestly concentrated deluge of pineapple, almond, flint and lime. Top wine and one of the greats of the appellation.
