Bodegas Martín Códax is famed for fresh, mineral driven wines from the Albariño grape and is one of the leading names in Spanish wine-making.
Martín Códax is one of the pioneering names of Galician wine-making. Few other wineries have achieved the same international visibility and today the winery not only represents one of the beacons of innovation for the region, but also a global ambassador for the Albariño grape. Established as recently as 1986, Martín Códax has made rapid strides and undoubtedly triggered a wider exploration of Galicia and Castilla y Léon's lesser known appellations. Based in the small fishing village of Cambados, where soils are deep and rich in sand and minerals, the winery boasts small vineyard plots in the serene, picturesque Salnes valley towards the northwest of Pontevedra. Many are trained according to the traditional trellising system known as emparrado and benefit from the fresh Atlantic climate. In addition to the flagship Códax brand, there is also the Burgans and Organistrum labels. All craft mono-varietal Albariño wines. Generally grapes are hand picked, de-stemmed, and pressed using a pneumatic pressure. Fermentation takes place in large stainless steel vats to emphasis the natural characteristics of the grape. At their best, the wines are capable of delivering fragrant perfumes, exotic fruit, fresh acidity and distinctive minerality.
