Barsac is a key appellation in Bordeaux's small but legendary sweet wine scene. Although often overshadowed by the global fame of neighbouring Sauternes, it is home to some outstanding botrytis style sweet wines.
Although the 1855 classification of vineyard properties in [Sauternes](/appellation/sauternes-aoc) also covered the small village of Barsac, it was the former that received much of the acclaim. Increasingly however we are seeing more and more growers keen to use the Barsac appellation to promote their wines. The village, located just to the south of the city of Bordeaux, is planted primarily with [Semillon](/semillon) and [Sauvignon](/sauvignon-blanc) as well as small amounts of [Muscadelle](/muscadelle) and [Sauvignon Gris](/sauvignon-gris) and covers around 390 hectares.
