In recent years Canon Fronsac has enjoyed a quiet renaissance. Its soft, fleshy red wines have benefited from increased investment and modern wine-making approaches. At their best, the red wines (and the appellation can only produce red wines) show opulent berry fruit driven wines with plenty of prune and plum concentration. They will last, subject to the vintage, around 7-12 years. Despite this Canon Fronsac is still largely considered a lesser satellite appellation of its more important neighbours. Although the wines can offer great value compared to other local chateaux in [Saint-Émilion](/appellation/saint-emilion-aoc) and [Pomerol](/appellation/pomerol-aoc), they can still be expensive. The appellation covers a very picturesque section of undulating hills planted with around 260 hectares of [Merlot](/merlot), [Cabernet Franc](/cabernet-franc) and [Cabernet Sauvignon](/cabernet-sauvignon). Many of the vineyards overlook the the Dordogne River.
