North of El Hierro, La Palma is distinct from the other Canary Islands on account of its lush, green landscape. Achieving Denominación de Origen status in 1993, the island has a long history of winemaking dating back around five-hundred years, and is today divided into three sub-zones owing to the considerable variation in growing conditions across its different areas. Native grapes dominate production here and wines are made in a range of styles.
